Overview

Ciao is designed to work with your photo library on your device. We do not operate user accounts, advertising trackers, or a backend service that receives your photos. Your photos and videos never leave your device.

Ciao does collect anonymous crash reports and usage events so we can find bugs and understand how the app is used. These describe what happened in the app — never what was in your photographs. See “Crash reports and usage data” below.

Information Ciao accesses

With your permission, Ciao accesses your iOS photo library so it can select a small daily deck of photos and videos for review. This may include photo or video thumbnails, creation dates, media type, PhotoKit identifiers, and file size information needed before deletion.

Ciao stores local session state on your device, such as the current deck, keep or let-go choices, daily completion status, purchase entitlement status, and journey statistics.

How information is used

Ciao uses photo library access to show your daily review deck, keep track of decisions during a session, calculate the size of selected assets before deletion, and request deletion through Apple’s system PhotoKit confirmation flow.

Ciao uses local session and journey data to restore an unfinished deck on the same day, enforce the free daily deck limit, and display in-app statistics.

Crash reports and usage data

Ciao uses Google Firebase (Crashlytics and Analytics) to collect anonymous crash reports and usage events. Crash reports contain the state of the app when it stopped working: the crash location in our code, iOS version, device model, and app version. Usage events describe how the app is moved through — for example that a review session was started, how many photographs were reviewed in it, or that a purchase screen was opened.

This data is tied to a randomly generated Firebase installation identifier, not to your name, email, Apple Account, or advertising identifier. Ciao does not enable Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA) and does not track you across other apps or websites.

What is never included: your photos or videos, their thumbnails, their captions, their locations, their dates, and their PhotoKit identifiers. Nothing that identifies an individual photograph leaves your device. An event may record that eleven photographs were let go; it can never record which ones.

Firebase processes this data on Google’s infrastructure as our data processor. See Firebase’s privacy and security information.

What is not collected

Ciao does not upload your photos or videos to our servers. Ciao does not sell personal data. Ciao does not use third-party advertising SDKs or cross-app tracking.

Purchases

In-app purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit. Ciao can read verified purchase entitlement information from Apple so it can unlock paid features. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.

Photo deletion

Ciao never deletes photos immediately when you mark them as “Let Go.” Deletion is requested only after you confirm the final farewell action and then confirm Apple’s system deletion prompt. If you use iCloud Photos, deletion may sync according to Apple’s iCloud Photos behavior.

Data retention

Ciao’s app data is stored locally on your device. You can remove local Ciao data by deleting the app from your device. Photos and videos remain governed by iOS Photos and iCloud Photos settings.

Crash reports and usage events are retained by Firebase under Google’s retention policies. Because they are not linked to an account, we cannot look up or delete the events belonging to one person; deleting the app stops any further collection.

Children

Ciao is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy when Ciao changes. The effective date above will be updated when material changes are made.
